I have sand as a substrate in my Bichir tank. They will bury themselves in the sand from time to time but I am looking for something I could put with them to stir the sand up more. Not a lot but to get rid of the air pockets that form. Now I stir the sand up once a month when I do a large water change. Is there a fish that could help? Maybe a crayfish? or would they attack my bichir.

I have no idea about the bichirs,

But I think corydoras will do something...

Im dumb though :)

Sand is about an inch. I'll probably stick with stirring it when I do a water change. I added some cory's once and they ended up becoming a snack once the bichirs got big enough.

The gas bubbles that form in the sand are often caused by anerobic bacteria, and can be pretty toxic to your fish. If your layer is only an inch deep, you should'nt be getting too many of those. I use my finger to give my sand a little stir in the places my pleco's don't dig to make sure I don't get build ups. Should'nt be too much of a problem with a one inch layer, but I'm glad to see you're keeping your tank as healthy as you can.
