well,,,,this was a foolish mistake but it looked soo pretty,,,,,,i was making a "test rig" in an old beat up aquarium so i decided to buy that nice sand they sell in colors....well i put the sand in and added already used water,,,so i derectly put some out of the store test fish ,,,,after a day or two they looked sick,,,,,they pooped the green sand out then i supected,,,,,just dont get this stuff,,,,store staff are sayin "NOT AT ALL ITS HARMLESS" but look here mac it aint, its an organ grinder ,,,,, i think its of the high grain sand ,,,its big and its not all natural,,,its got color,,,,ill just stay with pebbles (sand=no ugf) p.s i aslo dont think u should always trust "safe for freshwater"

Well, playsand, pool filter sand works GREAT in fishtanks. Sorry about your experience, but I love sand. It's easier to clean, for one. Food doesn't get lost as easily, also. Not only that, bottom dwellers love the stuff!

I use Pool Filter Sand. Works beautifully.

Well, that shouldn't have much affect on anything but surface area and bacterial colonies. Was this tank cycled? if not, I think that's a better culprit than blaming sand.

I'm not so convinced. What were your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels in the tank prior to adding fish? You said you set it up and proceeded to add fish but used old water from another tank. This doesn't cycle a tank. It is more likely that your fish died from ammonia or nitrite poisoning than colored sand.

ammonia 0 , nitrite 11ppm ,nitrate20 ppm u think there are the problem? i had no plant at the time
