My biggest concern for collecting your own from a beach would be what possible living organisms and parasites would be in it. Thats one thing you can be pretty sure isnt in the sand you buy at the store. Not sure how hard it would be to do some quick steralization or may not be neccessary. There is just an increased chance of such things from a beach.
