Sand?

Yes. Get poolfilter sand from a pool store or playsand from Home depot. Stay away from Quartz sand as its kinda rough and can cause algae with the silicates in it. Just feel the sand really good and make sure its not too coarse. It can be a pain though if your fish like to dig, the tank will look murky all the time. If anything get the smalles gravel you can and some fish will still have fun movin it around.

I use play sand from HD.

Can I put sand in A freshwater tank?
I am using Pool Filter sand that I purchased from Home Depot for $5 a bag. I like it. I rnsed mine very well prior to putting it in the tank and it settled overnight with the filter running. If you like the look of it, I say go for it. You can see how it looks in my sig, if you like, just click the link, or click on the "My Custom Member Page" for a pic linked right here at AC.

I've got play sand in one of my tanks, I like it a lot. I didn't wash it at all before using it - it was damp in the bag, and I just laid it in the tank. The water was cloudy for three days, then cleared and has been crystal clear ever since.
Pool filter sand has larger grains and many people seem to prefer that over play sand - I would prefer to use a larger grained sand but it wasn't available at my HD (they're constantly out of things, it puzzles me). The play sand seems to be working out so far.
One key thing with sand is to stir it up regularly to prevent the sand from stagnating - in anaerobic conditions sometimes dangerous gasses build up. I use a chopstick to stir the gravel weekly when I do water changes.

I used to use play sand in my tanks. I found that the easiest thing to do was to wash it in a 5g bucket first. Churn the sand with a hose and let the bucket over flow until it runs clear. Keep churning. Pour off the water and then pour the sand into the tank.

Arrange the sand the way you want it. It needs to be terraced with rocks or driftwood or something if you want different levels, and so forth. Then trickle water around the sides of the aquarium to clean them. Put a plate on top of the sand and add water fairly slowly.

Works fairly well.
