Sometimes a quick forrum search does the job quicker than waiting. Like kas sais in the link, you might loose some sand if you want to plunge the gravel vac into the substrate. If you don't want this to hapen, just have a bucket for the waste water. Then scoop the sand out of the bucket, rinse it in dechlor water and put it back.

Or, the easier method is just to suck the mulm off the bottom. Have your tube .5'' above the substrate. You don't need to "gravel vac" sand like you do gravel because the sand is too tightly packed for a signifigant amount of organic material to build up. In fact, a decent filter should do the cleaning for you and pick up any debris.

so vacumin th e sand wouls cause to much desterbence

You would lose a lot of sand, yes.

I keep one thumb on the outgoing end of the vac and block the flow for a second while I use the vac end to stir the sand enough to kick up a little detritus, then remove my thumb and watch the poo go bye bye.

I have a sand substrate, and the Marina (Hagen) gravel vac that I have has an adjustable flow rate on it, so you can slow down the speed, thoroughly clean the sand, and not lose any, it's superb. It was not expensive either.

Hope this helps

vaccuum it & f any sand comes through ,you can wash it ore thoroughly with aquarium water. replace it in the tank in a cup tilt it in should already be fullish & then lower it to the bottom slwly where you can tip it out without much disturbance @ all then slowly remove cup keeping it tilted, its a twist of the wrist 2 the surface youle master in no time @ all
