Saw a fish eat a mouse

Solely as an entertainment...This is a very touchy issue and I wouldn't touch it. Too much debate going on regarding the use of live rodents for fish food. They do contain lots of proteins and fats so not good if used very often. As an occasional treat, it s okay.

Here's a chart I asked from Anne (beblondie) last year.

I breed and raise mice for snake food and I OCCASIONALLY give my flowerhorn one of the newborns. Of course it tends to make a mess so a 75% water change always occurs afterwards but he seems to relish them. As far as nutritional value I figure if I feed it to my snake and he is healthy as a horse then they must not be that bad. AGAIN THIS IS OCCASIONALLY.

Okay, but let's discuss the part where the snake is definitely built to eat mice...are the fishes in question built to do that?

Lupin, thanks for this post :thm: Should come in handy for the wife's bearded dragon!

Since there are catfish that eat humans, I'm gonna say yes....

The real point here is, in the wild, most fish will eat anything they can get. HOWEVER, as mentioned before, feeding mice to fish in a small tank is very messy, and very expensive, and, whether people that youtube it admit it or not, it's the sensationalism they are after. I'd much rather throw a handful of quality pellets in the tank and save the mice for my snakes. They won't eat the fish pellets....dammit.

i wonder if it taste like chicken..

i believe why a predatory fish like the arowana or the piranhas may eat them is because of the opportunistic meal available to them and with them being carnivores, but its also that these fish dont eat everyday either, a bird, rat or other air breathing creature comes into their territory their fair game and a food source, its like lions we are not on the immediate menu but if they can not get their fare share of other four legged mammals they will seek us if their hungry enough.

I've caught many Largemouth Bass that had mice, rats, frogs and even birds still sticking out of their throats.
I quess they must be a good nutritional supplement to their normal diet (fish and crustaceans), otherwise they wouldn't spend the energy or take the risk of exposing themselves by taking something off the surface.

Excellent reading and interesting conversations - my personal opinions go with that of Snoopy - if it is for real nutrition then fine - but just to place a video on utube it seems silly to ruin your water so that you can post the death of a mouse via Oscar eating:(

If a mouse or any other live food is given to the fish for nutritional value, I have no problem with it. I do, however, have a problem with the giving of live food for the sole purpose of entertainment.

Like you, I fail to see the entertainment value of it. I don't particularly like feeding any of my fish live foods but population control is a must. Especially in a closed environment. As far as the larger fish eating rodents and such, Wolf cichlids will eat just about anything and is a predatory fish not bothered by spines or bones of its meal. I don't know about the others.
