scared blue gourami

How long have you had him? Is it a dwarf gourami? And does he eat?

If you got him, it could be a weak stock. Lately, I've been hearing a lot about Dwarf Gouramis not lasting that look. Sounds like a weak stock is coming in. If he eats, that's a good sign he's alrigth. If you just got him, then maybe he's still getting used to it. If not, try feeding him some live food (spot feeding) and maybe he'll come out more.

What size tank is it in? What are it's tank mates? What are your water parameters and what are you using to test it? Is the tank cycled?

It could just be stress related because he is new but it could be something else. Answering the above questions will help us help you determine that.

That doesn't sound like normal behavior at all, does it? Mine are downright ornery from the start. I'd give him a few more days, try to bribe him with bloodworms or something. Maybe adding a 2nd Blue to the tank? They'll pick at each other but that seems to bring them out of their shell and they never do any real harm.

Not sure I agree with that ... I had two and one killed the other by harrasing it ... I didn't remove it as was told that they would just sort out a pecking order and then settle down so IMO it seems some 3spot gourami can be meaner than others

Mine is still settling in to a new tank 6 weeks after moving him ... see my other post(s) on his odd behaviour. He went from being king of the tank to a complete wimp despite having the exact same tank mates and I didn't see him eat at all for the first week in fact I hardly saw him at all! I posted food into the cave he was hiding in. Now the plants have grown he is getting more settled and will come out but only at food time or once the lights are off

When I asked on aquariacentral I was told that they like lots of hiding places so they feel secure enough to come out which has definately been the case with mine. Also I turned the lights off for a few days and then had them on for less time each day for the next couple of weeks. That seemed to help too.

Tank size and tank mates would be useful to know. Is it planted with lots of hiding places? :)

I would not suggest getting another. It might bring him out but just for a passion of trying to kill the other. I have seen nothing but aggression when adding a second gourami. Just give him a little bit of time, how long has it been? Do you have any plants near the surface. Sometimes my dwarf gourami hides for days, but it's in his rotala near the surface and he is usually up to no good, tearing up my plants for his bubble nest and attacking anyone that gets close.

Don't get another one. The best thing you can do is provide the most optimal living conditions for your fish. They like warmer water that is in the upper 70's and they need lots of tall plants and floating plants. In their natural habitat there are many tall plants and lots of plants covering the surface of the water. I have an Opaline Gourami which is a cousin of the three spot and once I gave it a big plant that floated partially on the surface of the water, I saw a change in my fish. She hangs out by the plant and is a much happier fish.
