how could i have forgotten one of the most interesting schooling fishes,loaches are great,get small loaches like dwarf loaches,yoyo loaches.

An interesting point was brought up, that shoaling fish will only group when there's a threat, and schooling fish will school all the time.
Which are black neons? Mine are casually lounging all over the tank; they don't school anymore, probably because there's no threat in my tank? If they're shoaling fish, which species will school all the time? (That's what I was after when I got the black neons ...)

I'll second the Rainbows. They are very colorful and very active. I didn't see what size tank you have, so I don't know if size is a problem. Rainbows get bigger than neons.

I have corys already and right now I don't want anymore. The bottom of the tank is busy enough already, so the same goes for clown loaches (plus they just get too big)! I already have zebra and yoyo loaches.
I don't really want anymore barbs because they spend too much time near the bottom of the tank.
Do you really think the black neons would get eaten? They're sold pretty large around here, and they look too big for my angels to eat. The angels really aren't that big. As far as schooling/shoaling, the angels, while not aggressive (they're very curious about everything!), are nosy enough to get the blackskirts to school once in a while.
I've got another tank with livebearers (guppies and platies). I keep the pH in the community tank pretty low (6-6.5), and from my experience with guppies, I don't think swordtails would do so well.
I think rainbows are just too expensive around here, but I'll recheck the price on the threadfins. Those're the only ones I really care for. But don't they like a higher pH?
I like the serpaes, but I've heard they're nippy. Any experiences?

I have two red serpaes in my community and they seem fine with everybody else that's around (neons, black mollies, black and white skirts, flame tetras, danios, corys, two plecos, a beta, etc).

this seems to be a popular topic at other forums as well. and yes, the rummynose is usually the winner.
other tetras, as noted by others, tend to lounge randomly around in the tank once they feel comfortable with the surroundings. now i've seen my rummynoses do this also, but for the majority of the time they still school cheerfully with their peers. they do get a tad larger than most popular tetras though, about the same size as zebra danios.
try a dozen or two of the rummynoses if you get a chance. their trail of red masks snaking thru the aquarium is breathtaking.

red eye tetras are pretty neat.
giant danios are always active with just a slight hint of color to them. they get around 1 1/2"......

Gah! So I fell in love with some bleeding heart tetras at the LFS. They're sooo pretty. Not saying this is what I'll go with, but does anyone know anything about them?

There is a stargate in my aquarium.
I love Bleeding Hearts.
I've never kept them, but I'm planning to add them to the new tank I want to set up in the new year. From what I've read and observed, they're peaceful and tend to school in the middle layers of the water column. They'll take flake and small frozen and dried foods readily, and it's said they're happiest in lower light tanks with plenty of plants. --Anthony
