i'm upgrading my turtle to a 75 gallon tank, and i'm having trouble finding a screen for it.... i can find solid, one-piece screens in a 48" x 18", and i can find screens with one or two doors or that are completely hinged- but in a 48" x 13", which won't fit. i really need at least a door, if not two or the whole panel, because i have to get into his tank every day to feed him and do things in his tank and it's a pain in the *** to have to move the whole screen every day- let alone two or three times a day!!! i can't go with a glass top with two doors (like the one that came with the tank) cuz the glass would filter out his UV lights. am i just SOL or is there a good solution out there to this issue?

thx :grinno:

have you considered making one? I would think that would be pretty easy to do with some wood, a couple of hinges and some screening.... oh yeah and some cabinet knobs....

Why do you need a screen top for a turtle? Do you rest the basking light on top or something?

answer: three cats.

i actually had what i think is a quite brilliant idea last night... if i can get ahold of two 24" x 12" hinged screens like this, separate the two halves of each, and rejoin the halves in the middle to a length of wood, painted black to match, equivalent to the length of the screens and the width of the gap (two six inch wide screen pieces would leave six inches to fill with wood), then i'd end up with two 24" x 18" lids with 6" deep hinged screens at the front and at the back of the tank. they'd cover the tank, allow me easy access to all parts of the tank, they'd be strong enough to hold up to the weight if a cat jumped on them (which i hope to break them of very quickly) and they'd be able to take the heat of the lamps with no issue. the only problem i have with this idea so far seems to be finding the screens! my petsmart only carries them online and i haven't seem then in any other stores round here, and i really need a lid pronto.

what do y'all think? >.>

I think it could work. I guess it will depend on how handy you are.

But I still vote for no screen. Your cats will only make the mistake of jumping on the top of your lid-less tank once!

lmfao you don't know my dumbass cats! we've got one cat who is either so stupid or so stubborn that we've been trying to teach him to stay out of the sink by turning the water on onto him every time he gets in it.... four years later and he still won't stay out of the sink....

i've thought of that before, but i had trouble finding something that could take the heat of the lights, and the weight of any errant cats, was rust-resistant, and wasn't, um, ugly >.>

i found two 24" x 12" screens for 14 bucks apiece, and i'm looking at them sitting end-to-end atop the tank, and i could use my trusty wire clippers and cutco shears to trim the extra inch off the middle ends; i could then reattach the end trim with silicon or epoxy or something, or cover the exposed edges with black electrical tape. put those along the back of the tank and then put 24" x 6" pieces of painted wood or plexiglass or something along the front, and i've got seperate, movable panels =)
