my parents went to hawaii and bought a cool shell for my tank. is there something i can do to the shell to make it FW safe? or is there nothing i can do?

Often it will contain minerals and other such things that will make your tank slightly alkali and increase the hardness.

A few people keep shells in their freshwater to keep good and stable quality of water for balas especially. Often they will probably hide all shells, because it looks crazy in a freshwater aquarium.

Check your water parameters before you put it in and make sure the water is already hard and alkali.

If you do decide to put it in, get any contaminates off it. Some people boil them and then scrubb them in tank water to do this.

If it is small enough it will probably be fine but always remember to never just throw any old thing in your aquarium. Make sure it wont harm your fish 1st

how big is the tank? the Shell will dissolve, but the raise in KH could be negligible, but the shell will slowly dissolve away... if You like the shell, why not display it near or on the tank instead of in it?

A couple seashells in you tank should be fine. They will alter the water chemistry a bit, but probably won't have much of an affect. If the water is already hard/alkaline then they won't have any affect at all.

i have a 55g tank. i was reading some ppl had fish get caught and die in their shells so i think im gonna just display it next to the tank. thank you though for the replies
