I have two seahorses, both doing well, but one seems to be having seizures. Every so often he twitches uncontrollably. He is feeding well. Water parameters are ok and the other seahorse doesn't seem to have the same problem. Is this something that should worry me? I hand feed with frozen mysis and brine shrimp (OMEGA-3 and spirulina enriched) without problems.

pH 8.1
temp 25
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 5
Ca 400
SG 1.023
KH 10

Any suggestions, much appreciated??

my clowns do that too. I am pretty sure that it is a mating thing. No worries!

I would check with MonoSebaeLover--she has ponies, so might have some experience. Comparing clowns to seahorses is not going to be accurate--totally different fish, a similar behavior does NOT equate to a similar cause.

Cheers guys

Just gave them a good feed again by hand and gave them a good look over. No appearances of any gas bubbles or anything nasty. Hopefully this is something and nothing :D

I sent you a PM but will post here to show others what I think it is. Male seahorses will "vibrate" their bodies in order to try and impress females. Almost as if males go to the gym to work out and attempt to impress the female race. If you notice the vibrating and he extends his pouch or does anything unusual with his pouch, it is most definitely a sexual display. He is doing everything in his horsepower to impress the girl. If she swims around him while he is doing this then it means she is interested and the male gets even more excited. This is what it sounds to me like. As long as they are eating and appear healthy, no reason to worry.
I do agree with Orion, comparing one type of fish to another is generally not a good idea. In this instance it MAY be similar but Clowns and Seahorses are SO different there is nothing to compare! Anyway, hope this helps!

Hey mono what's the idea situation for sea horses ? Are some of them easier than others? Would you recommend any reading materials or sources?

No seahorse is easier than another nowadays due to the no wc individuals (here in the US and I think world wide). Ideal situation is a smaller tank (20-30g) with a good filter (minimal live rock and skimmer would work well-can't tolerate lots of current) and tons of hitching posts. Do a search on google. There are tons of great Seahorse sites! Barrons has a Seahorse book too.
Oroborus- if it is the female that is doing it, I will have to look in my seahorse book again but it is still a sexual display (in general) and the female is either intrigued by the male or she is trying to say go away! I believe it shows receptivity though. Keep an eye on it one way or another. I wouldn't be worried if she is still eating though. More than likely some natural seahorse behavior! Hope this helps!

my sea horces have mated several times it could be mating have you seen the females and males rap around each other yet ..

and i dont mean just hang off each other thats normal aswell but you will see to that will rap around each other then the male will exclude it self from the rest of the things in the tank and you might even see some agression to other things in your tank (this could be the jerking you witnessed)

if it is the case and you have a pregnet male (gee that sounds funny)
you might want to set up your self a small breeding tank just for hime as its hard to round up baby seahorces there like 1mm in size and about 2000 stong

another thing you might want to check your male that he has finished empying his pouch as it can cause other problems like killing your male ..
