Ok, I had a thread going here and am getting mixed signals regarding what I should do. My question is this. I have a box of seashells, including hermit crab shells, sand dollars, and random seashells from like clams and stuff. I got these in San Diego almost 8 years ago, so all the stuff inside and outside are well off and dead. If I boil these, bleach em, rinse REALY WELL, will it be ok to put in my tank with 8 South American Cichlids, as well as a Pecostomus(sucker algae eater thingy)

Also, can there be an abundance of shells, and are sand dollars acceptable as well?

Your input is greatly appreciated!

Not gonna vote on this one.

I think you have two options:
1) put them in water for at least 24 hours and then test it and see what the results are

2) send them to me so *I* can test them. If they work out okay, I'll use them to help buffer my KH :)

Heh.

i put three natural shells in my tank, two african turbo snail shells, and one fox shell. so far i haven't had any problems with pH. it stays an even 7.8

these shells have also been boiled at least 3 times and sat around in a hermit crab tank for quite a while. i used to have some rather large land hermit crabs and thought they would like those shells, but they never tried them on. then my large ones died and all i have are 5 small ones, so i took my beautiful big shells and stuck them in my fish tank (boiled them again before i did though) and haven't had any problems so far.
