went to s.w.s.a. yesterday and was a little disappointed that there isnt much sea there. mostly marine mammal when it comes down to it.
2 reef tanks and one tank with an octopus.
in one corner they had a seahorse tank that was shut down and empty.
the ray tank had a lot of fish but no live corral [watched the morning feeding session]. some cool puffers, one was triangular shaped and was very busy defending his turf, but i couldnt get anyone to identify it for me. on the edge of the glass were 4 little (percula?)clowns that looked lost without an anemone to live in.
they had a nice tank with some huge eels in it. and a 55 gallon bow front built into the wall with a couple poison frogs.

their only non saltwater tank was this little brackish 55-75 gallon i took a pic of with my super crappy $10 digital camera. it had 2 gsp's in it with nipped tails, a few mono shaped fish with yellow bellies and about 4 of those knight gobies [one's in the middle of the pic]. there was very little explanation of the contents of this tank.

the only fresh water tanks in the park were in the gift shop with a bunch of african cichlids in them. but no info about them.

with the nearest good aquarium being 180 miles away in corpus christi, they could have a little more fish stuff here to make it interesting. trade a little advertising space with local fish stores to get a few 300 and 500 gallon tanks out there or something.

suppose i coulda posted in general chitchat, but the pic was of the brackish tank.

It's probably a good thing the clowns had no anenomes. All to often people see something that they see at an aquarium or zoo and can actually and then proceed to do so, whether or not they can provide for the animal, in this case excellent water and very high lighting. I used to do this when I was little to and almost got my parents to buy me several things that would have been a bad choice when I thought about it later. I still here people talk in fish stores that are obviously uneducated to what they're going to buy but they have the money and company is coming over so what's the difference? I know how you feel about Sea World though. Good for shows and marine mammals.

I think that all the Sea World's focus on the marine mammals, because that's what the big draw is for tourists. Very few people want to come and stare at a tank with a few small fish or corals. I adore the Aquarium in Seattle, simply because I can go and sit watching shrimp scurry around for hours and never be seriously interrupted--the crowds all hang out at the big tanks with the big fish.

It annoys me that so many places have displays without adequate information about the habitat and care information. I mean, they give you that kind of information at the zoo for things like lions and polar bears!

I agree with OG...Shedd Aquarium was the same way the last time that I was there--nobody looking at inverts because there were more attractive specimens in vertebrate tanks. Sigh, when will people learn that inverts make the world go 'round?

what's the seattle aqauarium like these days? I was thinking about going on a road trip down there for a weekend.

I was there last March, and it was really nice. Not very crowded, though March is not the highest traffic month. Admission was cheap, they had nice displays, there weren't many that were closed. I wasn't thrilled with some of the information displays, but oh well. They had some cool water displays for small species (not just grouper and salmon) that were awesome. Now I just regret not having my digital camera at the time.
