After a recent C02 overdose (using diy! it can happen!) I lost a few fish and my plants kind of exploded on me. So i did some research on fish with a "Labyrinth" lung, and i remembered years ago when i had a grey senegal bicher.

So i made a trip to the LFS and picked up this little beauty. He is only about 3" long so he will need a larger tank eventually, but so far he seems VERY happy in his new home. I had 2 guppies last night, now i have one and a very fat Senegal. He has been doing well for about three weeks now.

Here's pics!

10g after a "hedge trimming", and grown in a bit

Cool Fish!

I think that you'll need to upgrade his tank sooner rather than later. These fish can grow to be 20" long and need a much larger tank than a ten gallon.

Also, even though your bichir and your beta seem like best buds now, I would be extremely careful with the two of them, and anything else in the tank large enough to fit in his mouth. I would hate for him to have a pretty red snack one night.

Yes, i know. I have a 40g that he will be going into (probably a single species tank), but im moving in a month so the 10g is only temporary. I need to get some nice lights for the 40g and i will be transferring the plant content and the bicher from the 10g to the 40.

And the bicher is definitly a feisty one. i had an old male guppy who wasnt doing so well after my c02 overdose, and the bicher swallowed him whole. Luckily he is about the same size as all the rest of the fish in the tank so i dont see an immediate danger as of yet.

You are correct about the 10g being small though, but he has a 40g in a month in My new home :)

Awesome!

I've always wanted a bichir but he'd eat the fish in my 55g, wouldn't get along with my oscars in the 125, and would be a bit to big for my 5.5 :)

This is the second one i have owned, the first grew to about 8" in my old 55g. One day my heater malfunctioned and cooked everyone but the bicher (93 degrees!), and i was so frustrated and upset that all my work and money had gone down the drain that i donated him to a friends 110g, sold the tank, and replaced it with the 40g. Hes still alive now, up to about 13" long and 2" thick!

Nice.

thanks guys :) i work hard to make it look as best/big as it can, and Ive learned a lot. gotta trim it once or twice a week now! unfortunatly a few inhabitants have gotten bigger as well and will need to be relocated soon.
