hey everyone. Im trying to set up a sump for my marine tank. I bought a 20 gallon sump refugium but it doesnt have much room. so what i was hoping would work was i got a 10 gallon seperate tank and drilled a hole through the bottom and filled it with bioballs, becasue the 20 gallon doesnt have enough room for bioballs. I felt i needed more biological filtration then wat i would have in the 20. i was wondering if my set up would work or not. I drew it all out on paint but it wont lot me load it here because its to big. so to best describe what i was trying to do would anyone who knows alot about sumps email me and says its ok for me to email them back with my sump set up drawing? my address is incubusboy87@sbcglobal.net

Anyways thanks forever is out there to help me becasue i need it!

um...

What size is your main tank? What do you have in it, or what do you want to have in it? You should just get a skimmer for your 20gallon sump... and have live rock for biofiltration in the main tank. look for my thread "65gallon photo journal" in the genral marine section, you can see how i made my 20gallon sump. I wouldn't get bioballs, JMO.

its a 37 gallon tank, that im just going to raise false percula clowns in with a long tenacle anenome and some soft corals. Like xenias, toadstools, and a few other softs. Have you ever had trouble with just live rock for filtration? Im just worried 37 lbs of live rock wont do it all, well and with the help of the skimmer. Actually probably be close to 50 lbs because 3/4's my sump space will be a refugium. So more live rock and some algea growing. So let me know on your thoughts of just live rock for filtration plus the skimmer, and filter pads. Because if that works it would be saving me tons of hassles and mataince cleaning bioballs and extra.

anyways just let me know,
Thanks, jon elder

Jon, as long as you buy a good skimmer that and the rocks will be fine for filtration, just do some planning before setting the tank up.

ya ive had the tank up and running for a year before last month my mom decided to come in my room and clean the salt of the top of my eclipse hood with some windex....and well we all know what happens! 120 dollars worth of fish down the drain. Im just setting it up again but this time getting rid of the eclipse and instead using a sump for more water volume, and then also going all the way and going to try my hand at corals.
