I have never had a canister filter before. I have just bought a Aqua one CF 500 filter. I set it up as per insructions. I put the water into the filter body to prime it. Put the plug in and I hear the motor running, but there is no water suction at all. It sounds like it's gurgling. I let it run for a couple of minutes. I don't see any kinks in the tubing. I am not sure what else I should be doing. Help!

Thanks

Just a shot in the dark, but I'd say the filter isn't primed yet. Also if there is a flow stop of some sort that might be closed. Unfortunatly I've never seen an aqua one filter here in the US and I tried to find some info online, but had no luck.

I believe they are the Australian equivalent of Eheim. Looking at the web sites they seem to use the names together with (Eheim) after Aqua. Like Hound noted, it sounds like it is not fully primed and may have air trapped around the impeller or in the canister/lines. Some of the canister styles here in the States come with a priming adapter for intial set up. Did yours come with one? Can you send a picture of the unit? Do they have a website with a FAQ section or help line you can call?

From some research I was able to do it seems that aqua one makes the via aqua filters that are sold here. Essentially they are knock offs of an older eheim cannister. My research into them indicates that they come with little instruction and have non existant customer service. I found reference to a web sight, but it too was an empty shell. On another board I found several posts indicating that they don't answer emails as well. One person had written that he had to use a powerhead to actually prime his.

If it were me I'd probably take it back for a refund if that's feasable. I use a Fluval myself that works well and there are other decent cannisters available that come with tech support.

Re: New Cannister Filter

Make sure you did no mix up the intake with the output.

Check to see if there is water in both hoses.

I have never used that particular filter but I know with mine (RENA Filstar XP 1 Canister Filter) I need to let mine sit so that the air bubbles work thier way out of the inside of the container. I help mine along by gently aggitating the filter(by rocking the filter back and forth gently) until no more bubbles come out.

Thanks, I got it

I believe the Aqua one is sold as Via Aqua in the US. They give you a double sided information sheet full of vague instructions and diagrams.. They gave two priming options. First one which I did was to open the screw top priming lid and manually fill to the brim with water. Then turn power on. Nothing. So I tried the second option of disconnecting the outtake pipe and sucking on it untill the the intake tube filled with water and flowed out of the outake. Yeah, it worked! I did email there website, but am still waiting!

Thanks for you help guys!

Hey sorry a little too late but i'm in Australia and bought an Aqua one. All i did to prime mine was to submerge the intake pipe to get some water in and held thumb over end. lifted let some water go in. put thumb on again and submerged. the let thumb go. it started a siphone effect and i let it go until i had water up the outlet pipe to the level of the tank water. then i turned it on and it started to plow. it cavitated a little but if you softly tap on the top the air bubbles suck through. it should be nearly silent. if it isnt youve still got air locked in it
oh and be sure to turn the "taps on" both pipes have taps to turn them of so you can take the filter away and clean it. turn off inlet first or youll have pressure when you undo the connectors. It was messy the first time i did it
