I have a mature severnum and I found it eating one of my cory cats the other day live. Today I see its still stuck in its mouth and it hasnt swallowed it yet. It has been laying in the same spot since yesturday. Will it swallow this fish or regurgitate it? What should I do?
Cories have spines, so it is probably stuck in the severum's throat. If it can't be swallowed and i dont' think it will be spit out then your best bet is to catch the fish and try to remove the cory.
Then once you have that taken care of remove the rest of the cories so this won't happen again.
i have read about this happening to large goldfish.
The advice given by the expert in that case was, "Pick one, and try to save it." You will have to try to cut up the cory to remove it from the severum's throat. Or cut up the severum to try to save the cory. The cory has spread it's fins, with the sharp rays and assuming it is going down head first, it will not be pulled out by the tail.
Generally, in catfish, you can "lay down" the spines with your fingers. You're severum must be fairly large, so you may be able to get a pair of flat headed tweezers and lay down the cory's spines and then pull him out.
I had a Red tail cat try to swallow a cory before. It was imposible to lower it's fins. Dorsel and pectoral (spelling) fins all spread. Had to cut all the fins off the cory :sad . But it was still alive and had to destroy it. 2X :sad . The Red-tail lived for many years after. Got too big and had to donated it to LFS.
I had a huge Hap that swallowed a small Zebra and got stuck in the mouth. It was suffocating the Hap that he was turning dark and I had to take emergency action to remove the Zebra from his mouth. I tried to save both fish and pulled the Zebra with a tweeter and I did it too hard that over stretched his mouth and both fish died. I could have save the big Hap if I cut up and sacrifice the Zebra.
