I have three severum, two equal size ,one smaller. Dont ask me the gender cause ive never been able to figure it out. They all get along well. However, yesterday the two slightly larger of the three have started 'kissing'... they literally lock lips and float/swim around together. Im assumeing it is some type of breading behavior. Am i correct? At what stage in the breeding are they? Is this the beginning or is one about to lay??

it could be a male and female ... what your seeing is often the female determining whether the male is 'strong enough' to mate with, or two males sparring for dominance. naturally, without knowing the sex of your cichlids, you'll only know the outcome when and if you have a spawn resulting from this observed behaviour.

Mine have been doing it on and off for the past month. Nothing has come out of it and neither of them get hurt.

lip locking is normal cichlid behavior, you either have a pair, or two males sparring

Thanks. He is the first fish I ever got. He is about 2 1/2 years old.

Yeah I think I have 2 males. They lip lock for a couple of days and then they just go back to do nothing. They are in a 125 gallon so they have plenty of room.
