Ok i want to get another ram form the one i got today but i would like to get the opposite sex, problem is i dont know how to tell what it is i have now. can someone tell me obvious ways to distinguish males from females, pics would help?
I am by no means an expert, but I believe you have a male ram there. It is difficult to tell. If you could post more clear pictures it would definitely help. One great way to sex rams is by presence of blue flecking in the black spot behind the eye. However, it is also a somewhat inaccurate way to check since coloration can be affected by everything from diet to genetics. The easiest and most accurate way to tell is to check the length of the dorsal and anal fins. If the dorsal and anal fins are elongated enough to reach into the tail fin you have a male. If not, it is a female.
There is a really great discussion about this particular topic on another forum, but unfortunately I can't remember which of the many forums I regularly visit that it is in. Search this forum for sexing rams and you should be able to find it wih little difficulty.
Wow.....lol....the blue rams in that site you posted are ugly !! I think they're probably more gold ram than blue........
But anyway........There's really no way to tell the sex by those pics you posted. Females only have pink bellies when they are near to spawning....the closer to spawning they are, the pinker the belly gets until it's quite red. Males tend to have bigger/longer showier fins and will never show pink/red bellies.
