sharks for a 55 gallon?

$12? Dang, the smaller ones sell for twice as much around here.

I'd say it would depend on what you are planning for the tank. Either rainbow or red-tailed sharks would work but with the RTS I wouldn't recommend any other bottom dwellers.
 
Ive had redtail sharks with community fish, they can annoy and bug the hell out some fish ive never seen anyone be killed or stressed to the point of death. I have one right now with gouramis and mollies. They seem to be able to handle him. It all depends on what u plan to put with him.
 
we've just decided to go with a tank full of all the different kinds of tetras. neons, glowlights, serpae, and all the other ones. we like them, and it will be cool to have like 40 schooling fish. at least we think/hope.

yeah, I noticed you've already made you decision, but Id like to say that rainbows/redtails are pretty cool. I have a redtail, a rainbow and an albino rainbow in my tank right now, they seem to do alright...they do bicker from time to time, but nothing serious.
