Sorry, didn't see the second question.
Inside the Shedd, The dolphin show is about the same as any other zoo or aquadic themed park. They talk alot about how they train the dolphins and the natural habits, followed by jumps and other tricks, but they don't jump through flaming hoops or anything, get there 1/2 hour before the show for decent seats, which are highly uncomfortable. And if it does fill up, the seats in the front are reserved for handicaps so don't think about slipping into those by moving the signs. They do the show several times a day and they know where the signs are suppose to be (you be asked to move).
Don't miss the reef exhibit, its in the basement, and always seems hard to find, even after going several times a year. Its by far the best part of the Shedd, and look below you when your in the shark room.
They also have a part showing how the filtration works, think of what we do, but on a huge scale.
The komodo dragon hasn't moved in the last year, but the other reptiles in the area seem pretty active.
Outside the Shedd....
It really depends on what you like...The hancock building has great views, the observation deck is great, but The Signiture Room is one floor up and just as good as view, If you don't have childern stop in for the night view over a cocktail, otherwise you can hit up the Sunday brunch, which you can choose between the buffet or table service.
There are alot of street fairs going on this time of year, usually about 4-5 a weekend. But I'm not sure what is going on this weekend.
The best views of the city can be had at the end of Navy Pier and by the Shedd. At the Shedd walk out toward the Adler planetarium.
If your at Navy Pier do the architectural tour given by Shoreline boat tours, its awesome, also you can take a bicycle tour from Bike Chicago at Navy Pier, its free, besides the bike rental. There is also a Segway tour, I think that starts by Buckingham Fountain.
If you like sports you can check out Wrigely Field, you can take tours of the dug outs, locker rooms, broadcast desk etc... or Soldier Field.
Besides that, shopping dining and whatever else, we got it all, I even know a place where us locals wait for an hour in line on Friday afternoon for a hot dog (Hot Dougs). But we also go for the fries fried in duck fat (availible only on the weekend)....
Let me know what kind of stuff your into, besides fish...
I've entertained enough out of towners...
