Shipping fish on an AIRPLANE!

This is a General Freshwater question.


I am going to be flying home for 2 weeks in march. I would like to bring some fish with me for my DAD. Is it allowed to bring a box (with Syrofoam and each fish in its own bag) in a back back on a Airplane??? I know they can put the box through a XRAY machine and the radiation should not effect the fish. The only problem I see is that they may think their is GAsoline or some such bad liquid in the bags.....Maybe I should be asking this question to the airlines?

Asking the Airline wouldn't be a bad idea. In general you should have no problem shipping them. It's done all of the time when people travel a distance to fish shows. If you are traveling into the country it might be an other story...but just in the U.S. No problem. You should double or even triple bag them and get Oxygen to inflate the bags if you are traveling a distance. Even if you have a short flight, take the time to get them packed as if they are going to take a "side trip" to Kansas or something courtesy of the airline. Oxygen can't hurt. If you go to a sporting good store you can buy a couple of those disposable "pocket heaters". The kind where you shake it to get it going. Wrap the Styro box well and label it with "Live Tropical Fish".

Sounds GREAT! I will do all that and place the box in my carry on bag. The plane trip does take a total of 8 hours. From leaving the house, getting to the airport- LAX. then the delays, then pickup a second plane with a 1hour or 2 layover. Then finally arriving and getting home. A WHOLE big adventure that I DO NOT look foward to. I USE Priceline and save Lots of MONEY. instead of 400-600 dollars roundtrip..I pay 200 dollars..
