I am considering buying some plants online, that I can't find at the LFS here. But - I'm in Chicago. Has anyone ordered plants during the winter? Do they survive? For that matter, inverts too - looking at some shrimp at the moment.

If you do order in the winter, what is your experience with reputable online vendors? Any suggestions?

The vendor should be able to tell you if they can ship right now. Many won't because of weather concerns, but it CAN be done...heat packs, insulated containers, etc. Just watch your weather, and make sure you will be able to get the package inside. Don't muck about trying to save a few bucks on shipping, go with the fastest recommended option.

There's a pretty sizable and reputable aquarium plant club in Chicago... I know it's a big place, but they would be worth it.

You could likely get cheap/free plants there, or recommendations to all the local places that would be worthwhile shopping at... There are a few in the area.

You can find them at http://www.chicagoaquaticplants.com/, or they are on facebook too I think. Their next meeting is a Wabi Kusa workshop, which I can say you will thoroughly enjoy.

I'll look into this - thanks for the tip!

Unless you can get to a club close to you, I'd skip shipping for another month or 2. No point in risking plants' or inverts' lives & disappointment. Many of us old timers are very patient for the "right" time or critters. My "winter < yours, lol.
