I recently began working as an Aquarist at a public aquarium. I want to turn a 210g tank into a tropical shipwreck tank. Anyone have any ideas or experiment with aqua-scaping like this? I was thinking about backlighting certain holes/caverns with colored submersible LEDs. Anyone have experience with these? How is the effect?

While LEDS would be fun to mess with; under salt water would be technically very difficult.

I also don't see how they would attribute to a 'ship wreck' look? Ship wrecks are categorized by sharp shadows and dark spots amongst a fully illuminated exterior.

Why would LEDs be difficult to put under SW? I've seen them in the various catalogs advertised as being capable of UW application, do they not function well?

As for the why I want to use them, I think they may look cool and add to the "shipwreck" image that most people who have probably never actually seen one would think.

It is hard to keep them dry underwater.

If the connections get wet you get instant electrolysis that can poison everything in the tank.

Based on public displays of a similar theme, I think you may find yourself disappointed at the unnatural look of the LED lighting system. However, this is only a matter of opinion, and LED units are generally small and easily installed/removed. I would suggest installing your "shipwreck" without the lighting system to see the initial aesthetic, and then, if you desire, install the LED's.

Out of curiousity, have you given any thought as to how you will install/construct your artificial shipwreck?

We've actually decided to make it a plane instead of a shipwreck. There are some really fantastic plane wrecks in the tropics, so we thought we'd try and put one together. Generally we use PVC/Screening/Crates covered with a special marine epoxy you can model and paint to look like whatever you wish. We use it in all the tanks with a great degree of success.

Sweet! I was going to suggest an epoxy. I'd love to read about the setup when it begins, and I'm sure it would make an absolute thriller of a DIY thread. I suppose the LED's may be useful for highlighting your species of interest that lurk inside the wreck, no?
