I have a 6 week old 75 gal sw tank. My LFS helped me decide how to set it up and I have about 2" of crushed coral substrate. I also have 50# of live rock with 50 more on the way which I bought online and am going to cure in our guest bathroom(god I hope it doesnt stink too bad, my wife will be mad)

The more I read about substrate the more I am becoming concerned with the crushed coral. Should I slowly remove it day by day and replace it with sand or can I put sand over top of the coral? Or am I freaking out over nothing?

Thanks for your help!

if you get some live sand, the crushed coral with eventualy be seed with the good stuff, oh i hope you are not putting the LR ontop of the substrate, catastrofic events may happen( you rock setup could shift causing something damaged or crushed)

no it is not. I have always done it and I always check before hand if it is stable. But If you do have fish that dig it can be a good idea, you can always just slightly twist the rocks so that they come to the bottom.

I think that you should put sand on top of the crushed coral if it dosn't become to much substrate to look good. Just a litte bit to cover it up, sand looks way better than crushed coral. Don't get live sand becuase the live rock will seed it in no-time.

Thanks for the all the help. I also twisted the LR in the coral pretty deep and its really stable.

Cool, I am going pick up some sand tommorow. Just gotta find a close place to buy some from.

Well bought some sand from the lfs and he actually had a tank with cc and sand. It didnt look all that great, the brown coral just comes back to the surface. So I just remove all of the crushed coral(pain in ...) and adding the sand in. Water is a little cloudy but the fish dont seem to mind all that much(I scooped the cc out with a mini net over 6 hours and it created a lot particules)

Yup dont bother just putting sand over the top just take all the crushed coral out, as the coral will sift itsway to the stop of the sand.
