I'm in favor of sumps for just about all tanks. Makes it easier to do water changes, and hide equipment, in addition to giving you the extra 'comfort' of more water. Can't stock any more, but what you do stock will be better off.
Would a 10 g be fine with out any baffles etc?

the problem about not having any baffles is that without them, you will have a constant sand storm if you have a refugium. they also remove bubbles before going back into your tank.
Actually, it depends on how the water coming in is handled. You can control the water flow pretty easily without baffling the whole thing--just use an acrylic box with a hole drilled in one side. Have the tubing go in the hole, and fill around it with base rock. This will trap the bubbles, reduce the noise, and slow the flow so other areas of the tank will be slower. Not the same as a fuge, since ti would require much slower flow through, but a manageable setup for basic bits.
