I'm not sure Loverboy should have been allowed to tour in their heyday."
Why are you directing that at me? Loverboy isn't in the top 500 as far as I'm concerned.
As for the "greatest" of all time, I'd never dare pick one. Many bands have been the great in their time, and many more have been great in hindsight. Led Zepplin, for example. Rock and roll legend tells us they were HUGE, but in their day, they weren't that iconish. But history has been kind, and future generations have found a love for their music. So, they're huge now, probably bigger than they were back in the day. To me, "the greatest", would be a band that made a difference in music, changed the way things were done and how the world though. There have been a few of those.. The Beatles changed how recordings were made with their studio innovation and approach to songwriting. Jimi Hendrix changed the face of rock guitar forever with his use of effects and technique. KISS brought theatrics to the rock and roll stage. Randy Rhodes/Ozzy ushered in the era of the neo-classical guitarist, which brought the theory and phrasing of classical music to the world of heavy metal. Nirvana, believe it or not, redefined rock music and dumbed it down from the hair metal scene of the 80's. The Darkness recently re-redefined rock music to bring back the guitar solo and spandex pants that Nirvana killed. All of these things were major accomplishments in their day.. However, for my own personal listening pleasure, Appetite for Destruction era Guns n' Roses will always be the greatest rock and roll band of all time. The attitude, the music, the rage, the anger, the lifestyle.. It spoke to me at that time, and I'll always identify with that album. Was it because GNR and Motley Crue were my first concert in 1987? Was it because Slash was my personal inspiration to pick up my first Les Paul? Yes, yes and much more. I'm sure someone that grew up loving Elvis would call Guns "noise", and that's fine by me. I call Elvis noise, along with the Stones and so many other icons that some people worship. So, in short, there is no definitive great of all time, only the great in your time, and in your mind..
And on a strictly personal note, I think Mick Jagger is a moron and Keith Richards probably doesn't even realize he's on tour half the time.
