Should the Stones retire

"If Head East and Loverboy can still tour, then why not the Stones? They still fill the darn stadiums, so there is still a fan base willing to shell out the dough. "
Tyella

Tyella, I'm not sure Loverboy should have been allowed to tour in their heyday.

Why are you directing that at me? Loverboy isn't in the top 500 as far as I'm concerned.

As for the "greatest" of all time, I'd never dare pick one. Many bands have been the great in their time, and many more have been great in hindsight. Led Zepplin, for example. Rock and roll legend tells us they were HUGE, but in their day, they weren't that iconish. But history has been kind, and future generations have found a love for their music. So, they're huge now, probably bigger than they were back in the day. To me, "the greatest", would be a band that made a difference in music, changed the way things were done and how the world though. There have been a few of those.. The Beatles changed how recordings were made with their studio innovation and approach to songwriting. Jimi Hendrix changed the face of rock guitar forever with his use of effects and technique. KISS brought theatrics to the rock and roll stage. Randy Rhodes/Ozzy ushered in the era of the neo-classical guitarist, which brought the theory and phrasing of classical music to the world of heavy metal. Nirvana, believe it or not, redefined rock music and dumbed it down from the hair metal scene of the 80's. The Darkness recently re-redefined rock music to bring back the guitar solo and spandex pants that Nirvana killed. All of these things were major accomplishments in their day.. However, for my own personal listening pleasure, Appetite for Destruction era Guns n' Roses will always be the greatest rock and roll band of all time. The attitude, the music, the rage, the anger, the lifestyle.. It spoke to me at that time, and I'll always identify with that album. Was it because GNR and Motley Crue were my first concert in 1987? Was it because Slash was my personal inspiration to pick up my first Les Paul? Yes, yes and much more. I'm sure someone that grew up loving Elvis would call Guns "noise", and that's fine by me. I call Elvis noise, along with the Stones and so many other icons that some people worship. So, in short, there is no definitive great of all time, only the great in your time, and in your mind..

And on a strictly personal note, I think Mick Jagger is a moron and Keith Richards probably doesn't even realize he's on tour half the time.

I'm not sure why that comment was reflect onto Corax either... I'm just as lost, birdie ;)

I'm not really into the Stones, never was but I know people who are/were and they think they're great... but that's not really what this is supposed to be about though.. is it... opinions on whether they are good or not?

I mean, everybody is getting back up on the stage and throwing concerts together, going on tour... those 70's bands.... Dylan, The Eagles, Loggins and Messina, Journey, they even re-established The Dead, after the Jerry years..... the ones that can pull it together, but why not the Stones too..... of course I don't think the craze would be as big as it were back then for them but I think it still would be big, just an older crowd though. Sure, you'll see a coupke 20 something year olds but not many.

Sorry Corax that was a response to Tyella comment. Don't know why I attributed it to you. The edit has corrected my error.

Before I repected your right to disagree based on principle, and if you had come back with a lesser response I would have respected your right if not your opinion. However I liked your response. GNR were the only band I ever thought capable of wresting the title from the Stones. Too bad they couldn't keep it together longer.

As for Keith not knowing whether or not he' on tour, well that's the beauty of rock and roll, they often propped Slash up against an amp cause he was too drunk to stand.

The stones are annoying... IMO... and Mick looks like one foot is in the ground already. I'm not over superficial, but perhaps he could use some of his millions to fix his face so he can at least PRETEND to have life left in him. lol.

I'll give you that one! LOL

I think the Stones should continue to tour as long as the fans continue to buy tickets.
I personally always liked most of their stuff when it was on the radio.
However, the 2 times I've seen live performances by them, I could not believe how bad they were. You couldn't even tell what song they were doing untill Mick started singing so you could hear what the words were.
A friend of mine after seeing them live in Toronto the last time, and viewing them mostly shirtless, now refers to the Rolling Stones as "The California Raisins"
lol
just my 2 cents.

The Stones are out there doing what they do because .......I think it's all they know HOW to do.... They spent thier most productive years boozing and drugging and playing music...and made alot of money and a big name for themselves doing that. I think they just don't know what else to do with themselves....

Should the stones keep on playing ? Sure...why not...as long as there are folks out there who still want to see them...go for it....but, I'm not one of them.....lol....I was a John Denver/Michael Murphy/Jim Croche fan back then...if Michael ever came back, I'd go to see him.....and if John and Jim were still around I'd pay to sit and remonis (spelling?)... with the rest of the folk crowd of my generation. Would a Stones/Hendrix/Dead Head fan join us....probably not... :D

LOL Mech..on the "California Raisins" comment !

The Rolling Stones were supposed to be the "ugly alternative" to the Beatles. They were the bad boys of their time. They WERE the GNR of the 60's. Mean, ugly and potentially violent, that's why people snatched up their records and concert tickets. No pretty three-part harmonies , just singing about Mom's valium and street fights and Satan (among other things).

...and God bless Keef and his perpetual confusion. Bless his little heart.
