Showcase Fish - What Could I Get?

I loved my Dwarf Gourami when I had him. He died. :(

I currently have two killifish in a 10g (I know, it's seriously understocked, but I'm waiting for offspring to fill out the tank. I have to be veeeeeery patient.)

I would recommend a Dwarf Gourami. Great fish. I love them.

IMO, you should go with a ram. Peaceful, fairly small, and gorgeous. But they need good water, so you will have to be good about water changes.

Are Rams ok in less than 15 gallons? I actually had a dream the night before last where my home builder had taken away my measly 12g and replaced it with a giant tank. I was still hugging myself and saying "now I can have my rams! I can have rams!" when I woke up!

...is that weird...

yes ;) lol.
I agree with the DG. A german Blue Ram is indeed beautiful and definitely ok in a 10g but I find Dwarf Gouramis to have so much personality, very spunky where as rams tend to be pretty shy and withdrawn. Rams like to hide a lot and I don't think will fill your expectations as a "centerpiece" fish, JMO :)

You should definately get a ram, if you want one, because you could have one in that size tank.

I think a nice fish for your setup would be a healthy betta, not the dying ones in the cups at petsmart. There long, elogant fins, and striking personality would draw everyone's attention, and they are not to picky either.

A betta would look very nice, as dvd_wightman said.

Killis are only picky if you want them to breed, these things live in dry stream beds. I had one jump out of my tank and be on the floor for at least 30 minutes and was fine. Also there isn't a fish out there with nicer colours. Most breeders use a small tank, sponge filter and no heater. I got mine for about $6 a pair from a breeder.

;)
