Im looking into getting a few shrimp, especially for my 2 gal guppy fry tank (Id like them to help controll the algae since I dont have a filter, which would suck in my babies) or possibly my 12 gal guppy tank. both tanks have plants and snails, and the 12 gal also has a golden algae eater.

Id like any information anyone has.

A ghost shrimp will be good in both tanks. I have 9 of them in my 10 gal tiger barb tank. they eat algae and leftover food. and when the female is carrying eggs, isolate her in the fry tank and the number of shrimp will increase.
 
Ghost shrimps, like above, are your best bet. I have one, and boy has that little sucker grown up.

Most fish will leave them alone too, and most community fish won't be able to eat them if they try. From my experience at least, the shrimp keeps his guard up.

They're great for cleaning up scrap food on the bottom- always, always eating.
 
I'd exercise caution about putting any shrimp in a fry tank. If you do, stick with amano or red cherry shrimp, not ghost shrimp. Amano and cherry stay very small. Ghosts can grow to 2" and may decide your fry are from McDonald's.

Yah I think cherry shrimp would be really good and they are so pretty. Unfortunately I can only find them online. They don't get very big though so that would be good. They are also supposed to be great with algea and not disturbing the plants.
 
Since the shrimp eat meat.. and anything that stays relatively still, how would they go with say Mystery Snails, small BN and Kuhli Loaches?
 
I agree cherry or amano shrimp should work.

You could get a sponge filter for your 2 gallon. They are powered by an air pump. The sponge is safe for small fry, no intake to get sucked into.
