Shrimp tank in planning

Question about filtration... I really like the idea of the Hydro-Sponge 0, the really small one, it's about 3.5" high x 2.75" diameter. It is apparently very hard to find though, not even many places online carry them. I am also beginning to wonder if it will provide enough filtration or if I should check out the next size...which will look less attractive.

I then began looking at the Hydro-Sponge I, the sponge on which is about 2" high x 4" diameter...but the tube on it makes it like 11" tall so I'd have to trim it some. This one I can find locally, the 0 would have to be ordered.

So, will the 0 be sufficient? Or should I maybe just get the 1 instead anyway?

I went ahead and got a Hydro-Sponge I to be on the safe side, it's currently seasoning in another tank getting ready for shrampz. I'm starting to get excited...!

During the next few weeks I need to decide on a heater and gather up the rest of the items.

Trying to decide between these 3 heaters:

Eheim Jager 25w
Archaea Ultra Slim 25w
Sera 25w

The Archaea is really cool and really small...but is also the most expensive...$28 @ LFS. Has out-of-tank control module. http://www.adana-usa.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=686

The Jager is a tried and true classic, but the Sera has gotten good reviews too...

Leaning toward the Archaea at the moment...anyone have experience with them?

Also open to other good nano heater suggestions.

Also to decide on: Lid. Thinking basic hinged glass and desk lamp for light.

It gets pretty cold here sometimes. I might even go with a 50w. With the Archaea it's the same size and only a dollar more.

I did one of those watt per gallon/dimensions/ambient temp fluctuation/etc calculators, and 25w met my requirements/parameters, but not too far outside my needs. Might be a more prudent move to go with the 50w in case the gas or my furnace goes out or something.

I figure either wattage should be safe for the small tank (5.5g), and not overheat, since they're adjustable and only turn on when needed. Or is that a terribly incorrect assumption? Any potential risks involved?

Well they all are supposed to shut off at a set temp, so that's no concern. I see what you mean though. I wish our two nano tanks had room for an adjustable heater. In time i bet someone makes one though.

What are the dimensions of your tank(s)? I find it hard to believe you can't find adjustable heaters for these nano tanks as I have kept several over the years and never had a problem!

i know with mine i have a stock 2.5gal and a 3gal long. i COULD get any heater in, but it would look like butt. Not sure with OP.

Standard 5.5g dimensions here, so I have a little more room to work with, but still want something sleek looking yet reliable.

That's not unreasonable. I thought of it much too late, but have you considered a false wall or something akin to the much larger systems? Could be a simple and cheap project with a small divider wall modded/molded to one corner. Plexiglass with loads of vents and thin sponge pads to keep livestock out, but temps steady. Could maybe even hide other equipment in there as well. Just a thought though.
