Hey everyone
I'm kinda new around here and I joined to gloat
I have an amazonian tetra tank with 4 SAEs (yes I know I was confused) and is now 3 months old. (PH 7.2 atm but dropping)
I was having a parasite issue from the Neon Tetras (spit) that I introduced, due to the lady's insistance, and I had to drop the water level for regular water changes. I have an Ehiem external filter with the spray bar in a verticle position spraying a strong stream through the length of the tank. (right to left)
One day I noticed two of the SAEs swimming toward one another and connecting lip to lip for a fraction of a second, upon closer investigation I noted that a small egg was floating in the strong stream after each coupling... This continued for about 3 days, none of the eggs made it as all the other tetras had a feast!
I have a video of this on going spawning process but I couldn't upload the 3gp (heaven praise cell phones!!) format.
Check the attached image of the tank, they spawned on the left hand side on the left of the bogwood in the middle of the tank (the strongest part of the stream)
Size: 300L
PH: 7.0 - 7.5 at the time of spawning
Water: Soft
Temp: 28-30 degrees (high ambient from living in South Africa)
Level: 2 inches down
Current: Strong
Plants: Anything that can hold the eggs securely from other fish
