Ok last night I noticed that one of my australian rainbow fish was breathing faster than he had been the last couple of days and I noticed that his dorsal fin was frayed. My water parameters are fine. The fish was not staying at the top constantly but I did notice a change in the fish. This morning the fish did not eat as usual,still breathing rapidly and I thought I saw small white specks on the fish's face and what looked like smears of white on the scales of his body. I decided to move my neon tetras out of their 2.5g and transfer them into the 36g and move the rainbow to the 2.5g and use it as a hospital tank. Only one problem am not sure how it happenned but one of neons got injured not sure if he got caught in a decoration but his tail got severed poor thing I had to euthanize him and felt so bad. My other neons are fine I have two more in the tank. I called my LFS and they suggested using aquarisol for my rainbow and I increased the temp water to 85 degrees as directed. Should I add aquarium salt too I read that it is a good treatment for disease since I am not sure if this is ich or some other parasite or fungus how much salt do I add? I am not sure if the fish has ich, a parasite or fungus. Do you treat for atleast a week with aquarisol? The bottle really doesn't say. Any help will be appreciated. I did remove the carbon from my sponge filter.

can you get any pics??

UDATE ON SICK AUSTRALIAN RAINBOW FISH NEED FEEDBACK PLEASE!

Unfortunately I left my digital camera at my sisinlaw's house and won't get it back until Sat to take pics of the fish. Anyway my rainbow fish is still alive. I have been dosing the tank with aquarisol for the last three days. The fish is not laboring his/her breathing as badly as before and the fish is swimming around and does not stay at the very top of the tank. I did see one white speck on it's face but it was gone this afternoon I still see some white specks on the fins and dorsal fin is still a little frayed appetite was not good yesterday so I did not feed today. LFS manager told me to continue aquarisol for one week to make sure whatever this disease is that it goes away. Am not sure it looks like ich but the fish is not totally covered in white spots could it be velvet who knows lol. Temp of tank I am keeping about 85 degrees. I added 1/2 tsp of salt the tank is a 2.5g. When should I try to feed the fish again? I don't want to pollute the water if the fish doesn't eat it.:feedback:

Have you fed any live or frozen foods lately? Have you added anything out of the ordinary into the tank (such as dirty rocks from the backyard)? And add a bit more description on the physical features of the rainbow fish please. A couple possbilities are:

* Bacterial infection
* Fungus
* Parasites
* Internal parasites (most likely if you have been feeding live or frozen foods lately)

For bacterial infection, I would suggest a mix of (or just a couple or maybe even one of) melafix, maracyn, maracyn two, tetracycline tablets, aquarium salt, and maracyn plus. Keep the temp. at 85 degrees until the fish is healed. You can try feeding it if you remove any uneaten pieces.

Ok LFS told me to use aquarisol and added salt to the water the fish seemed to be doing better although the fish did not want to eat. He was quarantined I had the heater on and told hubby to turn it off within in an hour he forgot and I found the fish belly up in the water. I switch off giving frozen brine shrimp, flakes and bloodworms all my other fish are fine. But thanks for the help I just replaced him with a bosemani rainbow.

Sorry for the loss....

Sometimes no matter how hard you try, genetics will just come into play.
