No, baking soda in the water will not kill the fish. People are always adding baking soda to raise the KH of the water.

too late. sunday morning i saw him sucked up in the filter. he lived a good long year. now his tank must go to good use. could i put 4 black neon tetras and 2 zebra danios in a 2.5 gal tank?

That's WAY too many fish for a 2.5g....
Zebras like to school and they need more room than that.

Maybe a couple guppies or another betta....
Or a few dwarf frogs would be cute...

Get a bigger tank. Try to see if you can upgarde to a 10 gallon. Then you can keep some black neons in a nice school and maybe some cory catfish or khulie loaches. A 2.5 gallonis sort of only good for a betta or maybe a dwarf frog.
