I've had 2 cory elegans for 6 months now - doing really well. Yesterday, 1 of them looked bloated, tonight he kept shooting to the surface, acting stressed, sitting on wood deco close to the surface. I put him in a breeding trap away from the other fish and now sadly, he's dead. Looking at the body I see nothing unusual apart from it being bloated ( the other elegans is slim ) & 1 of the gills seems red. Any ideas / help, please.

Going to the surface more than usual, staying near the top and red gills suggests to me ammonia poisoning. I would check your water if you have not done so already. If it is ammonia...then I would act fast to rid it. The bloatedness I am not sure...my corys often seem bloated when rowed up with eggs, so it may be something completely unrelated, and your he may be a she. But like I say, I am not sure.

I hope this helps all the same,
Michael.
