HELP!!! I am new to this forum and fairly new with aquariums. I started my aquarium about 8 months ago and have had my ups and downs but about 3 weeks ago I bought some new fish 5 neons, 5 glowlights and 1 placo. I added these to my 55 gal. tank along with 4 angels (small), 2 zebras, 1 swordtail, 4 rose barbs, 4 black ones and 2 glowlights. Two weeks ago my fish started acting funny and I noticed some white spots (ICK) so I treated them with ICK Away and now all but the angels, zebras, swordtail and placo are dead. I noticed tonite that my one of my zebras have a couple of white spots and I am at a loss as to what to do. I have put them in my 10 gal. and am treating just them should I put the rest of what is left in there too and completely clean out my 55 gal. and start over with that? I don't want to loose any more fish and really could use some advice.

If you'll search here and in General Freshwater, there are many, many threads that detail how to treat ich.

Basics--ich is a parasite that has three life stages. Only one--the free swimming tomite--can be treated with medication. While in the fish and in spore, it's invulnerable to medications. So, speeding up the life cycle by raising the temp to 85 will also kill the parasite. I prefer to add salt, up to 1 tablespoon per gallon of water, during this time as well. Frequent cleaning of the substrate and water changes make it easier on teh fish. Once the fish havbe gone 3-4 weeks with no visible infection, you can gradually lower the temp and quit replacing salt during water changes.

I have read the posts and I guess I didn't make it clear what I needed. I have raised the temp and added salt, but do I need to clean out the 55 gal and start over with it or will it be ok. I still have the angel fish and the placo in there, should I put them in the 10 gal and treat them as well? I probably sound pretty stupid but I am at a total loss as to what to do and how far to go with cleaning the tank.
Thanks so much for the help!!!

Your 55 gallon is infected if it still has fish in it, even though they may not be showing obvious physical signs. If you treat the few fish in the 10 gallon and not the others, once you put the 10 gallon fish back in the 55, you will be back to square one. You do not have to tear down the 55 and start over, but you must treat all the fish. I can’t see putting all of them into the 10 gallon, it will surely be overcrowded and you will then have other problems besides the ich. Is there a reason you can’t treat the main tank?
