TERRAMYCIN (OXYTETRACYCLINE HYDROCHLORIDE) TREATMENT PROCEDURE by Mridul Biswas
TERRAMYCIN (OXYTETRACYCLINE HYDROCHLORIDE) TREATMENT PROCEDURE:
Terramycine or Oxytetracycline treatment is very common and effective when we are dealing with external fungus or bacterial problems. The treatment procedure is simple as well as effective. Though it has its own side effects on the water parameters if the residue is not removed properly from the water after the treatment gets completed. That is the only reason it is recommended to carry out the treatment procedure in a separate small hospital tank so that the fish can be released to its normal show tank after the treatment gets completed without dealing with the residues.
You'll need a small hospital tank (such as 20G) for the treatment procedure. If you don't have one it can also be carried out in the show tank, taking care of the residues after the tretment.
Oxytetracyline Hydrochloride is commonly named as "Terramycine capsules" and is easily available in our normal medicine shops. Each capsule comes in 500 mg capacity.
*** Do check the expiry date of the capsules before buying it***
PROCEDURE:
1. Make the tank bare bottom and clear it completely (i.e. gravels, woods, filters, etc.) and leave only a pump driven airstone in it.
2. Make a 50% water change and replace it with a stored and well matured fresh water.
3. Raise the temperature of the water to about 30-32 degs Centigrade and maintain it. Use a thermostat if neccessary.
4. Terramycin capsule comes in 500mg capacity. The general thumb rule says that 500mg is enough for a 20G tank as the first dosing. So, gently open the capsule and take out the yellow colored powder from inside.
5. Take out a cup of water from the tank and mix the powder in it properly using a spoon.
6. Now pour the water in the tank and switch on the airpump.(The pump should be on high mode throughout the treatment procedure)
7. When the water gets completely mixed, introduce the fish in the tank after aclimatising it properly(i.e. floating the fish bag for 15-20 mins in the tank water) and mark the time.
8. After 6 hrs, change 50% of the tank water and replace it again with a stored and well matured fresh water.
9. Repeat the steps 4, 5 and 6 and the only difference this time is the amount of medicine added. This time 250mg of Terramycin should be added in place of 500mg. Mark the time when you are finished.
10. After 12 hrs again do a 50% water change and again repeat the steps 4, 5 and 6 and add 250mg of medicine. Mark the time.
11. After 24 hrs do a final 50% water change and again repeat steps 4, 5 and 6 and add 250 mg of medicine.
12. The treatment procedure gets completed 24 hrs after the last step.
13. Do a 30% water change to the show tank, raise the temperature to 30 deg C and introduce the fish to it. Then gradually bring the temperature down to normal with a 1 deg./day interval.
N.B: The above steps are to be carried out in a 20G hospital tank, so there is no requirement of removing the residue from the water and the same can be thrown away after the fish is shifted to the original tank.
PROCEDURES FOR REMOVING THE RESIDUE FROM TANK WATER IF NOT USING A SEPARATE HOSPITAL TANK:
1. Do a 50% water change after the treatment gets completed and add activated carbon(charcoal) to the filter media. It will absorbe the harmful medicinal residues from the water.
2. The activated carbon normally takes 3-4 days to completely absorb the residue and restores the water's normal parameters.
3. After 4 days again do a 20-30% water change and through away the activated carbon as it is of no use now.
Hope this article be benificial to the people who enquires about the Tetracycline/Terramycin treatment procedure. Wishing your fishes a speedy recovery and all the best for the treatment procedure.
