Sick platy? I'm stumped!

Hi all. I have a yellow Mickey Mouse Platy, female, that I got about 2 months ago, along with another platy. Everything has been great until this last week.....she started to lose weight very suddenly, although she eats like a pig. She looks for food a lot of the time, even after she has eaten - but the weight loss continues. The best way I can describe it is that her underside is flat now, almost concave in appearance. She does seem to be working harder at swimming, but not horribly bad. If it weren't for the weight loss, I doubt her swimming would have worried me much at all. Anyone have any ideas on this? I'm stumped....all the other fish are fine. Her scales, eyes, mouth everything look fine, albeit skinny. Thanks for any help you can give me! Jenni

Hi,

I'm not that much of a expert on diseases, but it sounds like internal parasites to me. What are your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels? How big is your tank? What other fish do you have in it?

Thanks for trying to help me! Ok...my levels....ammonia is zero. Nitrates are about 18ppm....nitrites are zero.....Hardness is 75ppm....alkalinity is about 60ppm and ph is about 7.2. I have a 10 gallon tank (2 years old, cycled) and we have te 2 platys and 2 bronze cories and no live plants. We also have a 3rd platy, but he was born deformed and is about 1/4 inch long, so he doesn't take up much space at all! If something was going on in the tank, I would sure expect the little one to be the first with symptoms, just because he is so fragile. The sick platy is acting like she's starving, but she's eating tons. Thanks again! Jenni

Hi,

Yeah, I heard somewhere that sometimes one sympton of internal parasites is the fish loses weight, but still eats a lot. If you decide to treat her for internal parasites, put her in a hospital tank.

Hope your Platy gets better!

Good luck!

Parasites are certainly possible, but how long has she been skinny? It may be possible that she dropped a batch of fry. One of my old platys would look skinny for days after she gave birth. Just a thought.

Thanks for the advice! I went out first thing yesterday morning and got the Jungle Parasite Clear. Do you have any idea how long it takes to see a result from this? It's been almost 24 hours and I see NO improvement in this fish. Nope, she wasn't pregnant.....but thanks for the advice! Jen

Hi,

I think a few days, but I'm not sure.
