So I got a good deal on some used vinyl siding a while ago. Right now, the house has that old masonite (or is it called clapboard?) siding on it. I didn't actually plan on putting it on until I get the rest for it (got enough for two sides or now), but never thought that I don't really have any place to store that much siding through winter. Right now it is in a couple big piles in front of the house. So instead of leaving it out in the snow, I figure, what better place to store it than right on the house? Here is the problem. First, I want the new siding that I will eventually get to go on the front and end of the house that you can see, and stick that older stuff on the other side and the back. But for now I want to stick the old stuff on the front just to get it out of the way (and it would look alot better than what is on there now, that old masonite siding chips so badly). The main problem is that I don't have any "J-trim" yet, and don't really want to buy any new to put on temporarily incase I break it. I heard it is very expensive. My brother figures that if there is no "J-trim" around the windows, that water will run behind the siding. I don't really see how this would be a problem because the old siding would still be on. Can anyone see any problems with the current plan? After I get all of the siding and new stuff, the old siding will be stripped off and the house wrapped with typar, or some other kind of wrap, and done the proper way.

I don't know actually. I have heard other people call it masonite, so that is what I call it. It seems almost like the cheap pressboard stuff that they make some computer desks and stuff out of.

DOH.... I know what you're talking about now with the kind of siding you have. It seems like a lot of work to me to do what you want to do. If you have no weather problems with what's up on the house now I would just cover the pile of siding you have and wait til you have everything together for the whole job. I sided my old house and it took a lot longer than i thought it would. I wouldn't put the siding up without the j channel because the wind might get under the end of the siding and bend it back.

i would also worry about moisture getting behind the siding you are placing temporarily and having it crack or become damaged because of frost-heave.
