Silver Dollar blew up, now has a hole in it's side

I've got an adult silver dollar that blew up like a ballon from about half way down the body to the start of the tail fin. This started a little over a 10 days ago. It's been swimming and acting normally the entire time.

A few days ago, it's swelling started to go down, but a bump appeared on one side. There was a small dark area at the top of the bump. Now, that small dark area has "rotted away", for lack of a better term.

The fish has a hole in it's side about an 1/8" across, but continues to do everything as usual.

Any ideas what happened to this fish?

I would be more worry about how to treat it then what happened to it. Not trying to be rude but that might help you get more responses. Theres a lot of AWESOME people on here who love to help treat sick and injured fish (THANKFULLY!).

Figuring out what happened to it is the first stage in working out how to treat it.

Any chance of a photo?

Here are pictures of both sides of the fish. You can see that the left side of the fish has been deformed too.

This is a long established 125 gal. community tank. It's totally healthy by all other respects.

No new tank mates.

Looks like he got shot or something. I would try to keep the water as clean as possible. I would also try not to introduce new fish but if you do, you should quarantine them. That's a big hole and bacteria might get in. Bi-weekly water changes would be good too.

Almost looks like there was once a bulge, and it popped. The other side may pop as well over time. That area of the fish doesn't seem to consist of any organs, and the swim bladder is higher up than that. As far as I know, that area is mostly flesh. If you have a microscope, I would probably take him out and take a swab of the area just to make sure it's not parasites.

It is possible that the fish has TB or a parasite. Either way you must be very careful in the handling of this fish and all tankmates. Fish TB can be transmitted to humans! You should quarantine this fish immediately and watch for any other changes. You also need to keep a close eye on tnak mates.

It there any decoration in the tank that could cause a puncture wound?

the hold looks so round and almost perfect,. it looks almost like a bot fly hole that affects horses and other livestock,.. perhaps an aquatic version parasite that hosts till adulthood and then leaves the host via hole chewed thru where ever it can,.. check other and keep and eye out,..

see anything strange in the tank? weird when you don't know what came out,.. if it was ragged i'd say an abcess, but that is too clean of a hole,.
but then again some abcess' do leave kinda clean holes also,..????????

was there a full moon? lol
