I have a silver dollar and an opaline gourami. I've seen the silver dollar eat the gourami's poop... is that normal or is there something wrong? I'm starting to think maybe they aren't such great tank mates. The silver dollar seems to be schooling with the gourami...? I was thinking about getting another fish for the silver dollar to hang with but I'm worried about tank size and really don't have the money to upgrade to a larger tank. I know I'm probably pushing it with a 20G tank anyway. Help?

how many fish do you have?

And fish do this offten...they think the poop is a worm or somthing but they end up spitting it out or spray it out their gills.

I have 3 fish... silver dollar, opaline gourami, and striped raphael. I've watched it eat the feces... it didn't spit it out and I didn't notice anything coming out of the gills... which is why I was concerned.

Humm dosnt seem over stock to me but i dont know how big your fish are.

And i dont "think" fish poop will kill another fish, they swim in it all day haha. So i guess your fine but just look out for your silver dollar acting weird. Or maby you feed your gourami some good food to the point the poop taste good too. =X

Yep... I saw the silver dollar watching the gourami poop. As soon as it released, the silver dollar swallowed it up. Yuck.

Yoru fish has a fecies fetish. LOL take that one back!

BTW Silver Dollars are a schooling fish they do much better in groups of 3+

here's my take on it. Gouramis are known for nibbling algae from glass or oranments. Silver dollars mouths are built in a different way that they can't bite on the glass or the ornaments to eat the algae. After the algae has been digested and compacted by the gouramis and comes out as poop. Now it's an easy food to be recycled yet again by the silver dollar, who enjoys green veggies.

Makes you want to think the silver dollars are smart...but then again, I don't know they realize it's also the poop they're eating.....
