I was just checking my fish after feeding them some brine shrimp. I noticed that our large silver dollar, Chubby, was behind the plants with belly on the gravel. He normally swims back and forth in the front. It looks like he has lost about half of his scales. We always look in the tank but this is the first we've seem any of our fish act strange. He has always been an aggressive eater, that's why he is the biggest. I checked the tank parameters 3 days ago, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 40 nitrate. I did a 30% water change the day after the readings. I added a couple spotted pearl shrimp this week as well. The fish were fed live black worms yesterday for the first time. Now Chubby is resting on the bottom, never done that before. Please some advice. Thanks.

sounds like he is getting picked on by something in the tank.

your nitrates are a bit high, but for relatively hardy fish like mature silver dollars, that should not be a problem. God knows my nitrates are a lot higher than yours and my old fart silver dollars do fine.`

watch for signs of aggression and I would probably do another 30% change in a day or so just to be safe.

One of the kissing gourami's is "kissing" the side of his body. But this is not the norm either, I think it is trying to eat the scales as they fall off.

Now he is lying on his side in the right front corner of the tank. I don't think he is going to make it til morning. The only thing I can say is I feel like we just lost a close family pet. I will keep you all up to date. I feel so bad watching Chubby lie motionless on the bottom waiting for the reaper.

those kissing gouramis get big and aggressive. most people don't know that until, like you, they start seeing problems and look for help. is your fish still alive? is it possible to isolate him in another tank and treat with melafix?

The fish did not survive. I know that the kissing gourami's can be aggressive. I have not seen them, we have 2, bother any other fish. This silver dollar was the largest fish in the tank. The gourami's are maybe 2 to 2 1/2 inches now. The silver dollar was 3 to 4 inches. It was sad to see him go. Thanks for your input.

sounds like there could have been some aggression issues.what wereyou feeding the SD?
