Is it possible to mix silver dollars with a few African cichlids, i.e., Electric Blue Hap and Electric Yellow Hap? I'm aware that the Africans require a higher Ph.

I was thinking of 4 silver dollars with the above two cichlids in a 40 Gallon (36x18x15).

Let me know what you think.

I can't speak for everyone but my silver dollar is tough as nails!. I have had him for about 4 years nows and he has out lived everything that has ever been put in the tank. He used to be my oscar's good budy until HITH took my Oscar away. But I had him in with other cichlids as well they got sick and died but old silver is still around. Right now he is in with 2 Jewels for the last six months with no problems. To me he is one of the hardiest fish I have ever owned. He never got picked on to badly either. I think there is something about how there body is shaped that cichlids don't seem interested in. This is just my 2 cents! HTH

There is indeed a difference in requirements for pH, as well as GH and KH. I do keep silver dollars with my Central Americans, but not with my Africans. As dither/target fish in that environment, I would recommend various Rainbows, Cyprichromis Leptosoma (a schooling cichlid), or Lampricthys tanganyicanus, the Tanganyikan killifish.

Okay then, let's scrap the african idea for now. What do you think of SA cichlids like a firemouth, rams or any others that would go well with the silver dollars?

Silver dollars would go well with any mid-sized South American cichlids in a 40g. That would include most of the acaras and juruparis, as well as festivums (severums too, but I think they get a bit large for a 40g).

For Central Americans, I think your suggestion about Firemouths is a good one, especially for that sized tank.
