On saturday i added three silver dollars to my aquarium. They settled in by sunday and appeared to be in good health. The only puzzling thing is they wont eat the flakes i feed my dannios, or even take notice of the food. Today i tried a piece of lettuce and it hasnt been touched.
they arent eating because they aren't "settled" in yet. If they haven't at least tried to eat after a week then start to worry, but before a week I wouldn't worry about it.
Buy some veggie flakes for them. Silver dollars are herbivores and will benefit from the vegetables and the right diet.
I've had SD's for over 6 years now. I think I've finally learned a few things about them.
They aren't big fans of coming to the surface for foods. They seem to prefer it sinking down towards them in the middle of the tank. They do eat off the floor also, but rarely the surface. They will do it, just not alot.
Mine have eaten everything from flakes, pellets, algae wafers (they love those), live brine shrimp/live bloodworms, frozen brineshrimp, frozen bloodworms, you name it. SDs are supposed to be vegetarians but mine must have missed that memo. they will eat anything. I also feed lettuce and cucumbers every so often. They may not want to come to the surface for the flakes, mine never really enjoyed flakes that much anyway.
When you feed them lettuce did you use a veggie clip? its a suction cup with a clip attached. its handy when feeding vegetables. I tried floating lettuce but they were never interested in floating veggies, they like it on the clip.
so I suggest a suction cup for veggies, and try some sinking pellets and algae discs... any food that sinks instead of floating.
Hope that helps and I hope they start eating! any other questions. hit me up. good luck.
