I,m having a bad problem with diatom algea , my lfs told me to use maracyn to kill it but it dosent seem to work , they also told me I didnt need a skimmer on a 20 gal tank sure could use some exspirance strenght and hope with this

Algae isn't a huge problem its just unsightly. so don't go crazy. Personally I don't like to use antibiotics on my tanks since I want the good bacteria (we all need it). There are some that would argue and strongly recomend it, but this is just my opinion.

If you tank is new (like mine) then it is a normal part of a immature nitrogen cycle. I would suggest adding carbon madia to your filter. It will remove phospates from your tank and they can add to the algae problem. also think about your lights and how long they are on. if they are cheap lights (like the flourescents I use,) they will give you less of the wanted spectrum and more of the unwanted.

One thing to remember is that algae is not really bad, its just a pain. when nutrients build up in your tank something uses them to grow. A protein skimmer is another nutrient remover for your tank. so it's your decision what you want to put in and take out of your tank. Just remember It all has reprocussions to what your choose.

If you want to try a skimmer I have heard good things about Lee's skimmers. They are dirt cheap and if you keep them clean and follow directions the work for years.

I'm not running a skimmer yet, but I desperately need one... probably be from my next check...

Well, the maracyn won't really do much for diatoms. How old is the tank? What all is in it? A skimmer might help, but figuring out why it's happening is a better solution.
