I went to the rock place today, and picked up some peices of slate to use in my tank. The only thing im worried about is when I was washing them off...the shiny/flakey stuff (i think it's called mica) rubbed off.

Is this slate still OK for my tank? It's already established, so I dont want to cause any harm to the fish via water quality changes.

If you need pics, I can have them tomorrow.

Thanks.

I have some of that kind of stone in one of my Malawi tanks and it seems to be fine. It's been in use for over a year and no problems.

Cool, thanks. I ended up buying 23lbs of it...got a little carried away... . Oh well...at 26 cents per pound, it's not like it mattters.

I built an awesome little cave out of it last night, waiting for the silicone to dry, then I might just put it in a rubbermaid with some water to see if it affects the water at all.

I couldn't get silicone to stick worth a darn to the stuff. Kept flaking off... Maybe you'll have better luck.

Make sure you wait at least 24 -- preferably 48 -- hours before putting the siliconed stuff in your tank.

Good luck,
Jim

I got the silicone to stick pretty well. It's flexible (after 12 hours), but it holds it together perfectly.

I'll get a picture of the cave I made later.
