Hi everybody! I've already posted this on a couple other forums, but I value y'alls advice and experience :grinyes:. (I hope this doesn't seem like spamming because I've posted something similar to this before, but it was in Wall-E's thread...so I don't think it reached a wide audience. So mods feel free to delete this and I apologize!)

I am planning to set up a betta operation in my fish room. I've included a list of things I want the set up to have, as well as my ideas for the cheapest way to do it. Input is definitely needed! There's got to be a cheaper way! (cheaper set up=more set up=more bettas!) Thanks for looking!

-Set up should house 5+ bettas

-Set up will be in my fish room, which consists of a small carpeted bedroom already loaded with 3 tanks, 2 desks, & 1 crappy particle board book shelve full of books and warping from their weight. I have a 2 bedroom apartment and therefore no conceivable way to create like a drip system/drainage system in the fish room.

-Each betta must have 5 or more gallons to live in

-Tanks need filters

-No need for heaters as I heat the entire fish room to 78 degrees. Very accurate thermostat and no wild temp fluctuations. I can get heaters though if you guys think it is essential.

-The tanks will contain living plants for the benefit of the bettas, and thus the need some sort of lighting. However there is no need for substrate, as I have a surplus of floating plants and plants that attach to rocks (plants include: penny wort, anarchis, hornwort, duckweed, anubias nana, java fern, java moss).

-I have 5 24" x 7" inch shelves that attach to the wall. The wood is 1" thick (it's not "real wood", but some sort of particle board). They work like this:

I don't know if they will work, as water can be very heavy! I can certainly test them.

-I don't consider shelving/placement of this tanks too big of an issue, as I can "borrow" varying sizes of metal cabinents/desks/coffee tables from the basement storage of my apartment building. :evil_lol:

My idea thus far for a 10 fish set-up:

(not pictured is additional filter media, fish food and possible substrate I can get at LFS)

Get separate 5 gallon tanks, each with it's own internal filter hooked up by airline to a single, massive air pump. Each tank has it's own light/water/filter. No risk of getting fish sick with divided tanks. Those little "Kritter Lights" look sketchy and perhaps useless...so I might opt out and go with some sort of overhead type thing. The filters might be useless too...so I could always go with something else. Quantities might be a little over kill too. (Do I need 50' of tubing? doubtful. Do I need that hulking air pump? doubtful. Could definitely switch them out!)

Screen cap is from Pet Mountain, who currently has free shipping over 99$...I could go with another source like Big Al's or something.

What do you guys think?! What's a better way to do this?!

If it were me, I would find a way to set all the tanks in a row and place a single long light fixture over them. So, if you have 9" X 12" footprint tanks, place them in a row with the lesser width facing front, so they form a row about 45" long, and suspend a 48" T5 or T8 shoplight over them. This will be much less expensive than individually lighting each tank. Just leave a foot or so between light and tanks to make feeding and maintenance easy.

Be sure to paint facing sides of tanks or otherwise provide visual barriers between fish.

you looking for cute or you looking for cheap best set up?

first i would never use one of those shelfs 2nd i wouldnt use one of those little critter type set ups. i would go easy and buy 10 gal tanks and divide them up. i would also get a shelf like at lowes home depot costco sams club that you can stack up in rows the tanks. i would also just use a show light over the fish tanks. i would get more airline tubing and you can get pollyfil at walmart. i would make or buy sponge filters. i wouldnt have just a corner filter with pollyfil.

Thanks for the reply guys, I really value your input. I think I am going with some of your ideas, as they seem more cost effective!

New plan!:

-Get 10 or 20 gallon tanks used and/or new

-Divide the tanks into separate sections. Get sheets of glass or acrylic cut for me at Lowe's and seal them into place. Each section of the aquarium should have it's own water for no cross contamination.

-Every section gets it's own filter. (I thought about putting filter fiber, carbon and ceramic beads in all the corner filters, but it might be over kill. I'm probably going to go with sponge and perhaps making them myself(double thanks for the tip Mgamer)) Everything will probably be hooked up to the same biga$$ air pump like formerly planned.

-Buy cheaper air pump

-Lid the tanks with DYI glass/acrylic/plastic mess or something

-Get overhead lights instead of individual ones

-Steal metal cabinents/better shelves from apartment building's basement to put the tanks on. Throw out useless crappy other shelves.

Now my plans on the tank divisions:

10 gallon divider positions:

I think I like option B the best, as it lets the bettas have more lengthwise swimming space, and the tank can be placed in the shelve "sideways." Only down fall is I will need more glass for the dividers with Option B than Option A.

Dividing up a 20 would just have 4 equal corners.

Thanks for reading!

1st go with the biggest air pump the amount of air is always the limiting factor
IME stay away from the whispers they have known problems according to big als costumer support I have 3 100 and 2 60 that I have to repair have not lasted more than 6 months.

2nd go to a glass shop not lowes the glass is to thin its more for picture frame glass replacement.

3rd there are small sponge filters on ebay from either China or Malaysia that are perfect for this type of system I have 2 for my 2 1/2 snail tanks I will post a link if I can find a listing for them.

4th PM to big als they have free shipping on orders of $75 +

Home depot caries the heavy duty racks that are black and hold 800 lbs per shelf I think they are around $75. 63"x 18" x 72" they will hold 3 10 per shelf with no problems.

good luck and don't forget to post pictures as you go
