Small tank stocking

What about endlers livebearers for the tank?

Dwarf puffers were a good suggestion as well. They are 100% freshwater fish. Very fun fish!

Cherry barbs and kuhli loaches are really not suited to a tank that small.

You're advising me to get a paradise fish? I just briefly searched for information on them, apparently they grow four inches long and dart back and forth all day, and so should have a larger tank (20+ gal). I'm not seeing the logic there. As I said before, I'm not looking for fish that swim rapidly back and forth all the time, pacing.

I really don't like gouramis. Sorry to all those who love them, but they're just not my thing. Bottomfeeders/invertebrates are my favorites, but I can't have any invertebrates, dwarf frogs, etc. due to school rules.

Thanks for the input.

For bottom feeding fish you could try 3 pygmy cories. Are you against the sparkling gourami as well they don't get so big or maybe a honey gourami. I'm not sure how many you could have as I've heard they can be territorial. Or maybe some guppies?

I think that guppies are a good choice. You could have a few of those and maybe a snail if the school allows it.

You could go with the Betta and a few otos! Also Dwarf Gouramis are perfect. They stay to about 2-3 inches they would work perfectly. Also I had a Paradise fish in a 10g and he was happy. I also had one in a 7g tank!

Hmmm...I don't know. I got the tank to house invertebrates only, but the stupid college changed its policy and banned everything but fish (yes, this means NO shrimp and snails - who knows why).

I've read that all otos are wild caught, probably using cyanide, and often die when acclimating to tanks. Also read that they are hard to feed if you run out of algae, as will happen in a tank this size, so I like them but dismissed them from consideration earlier.

Guppies are kind of pretty, but don't they just pace up and down the front of the aquarium all day? I'm not trying to argue all the time, but I'm confused. Apparently female guppies and cherry barbs grow to about the same size, but the barbs seem to be less active swimmers and are less likely to reproduce. Why is the one suitable for a small tank and not the other? And aren't even dwarf gouramis more of a bioload than a kuhli loach?

My beginner tank has been running fine for about 6 months now with plants driftwood, two zebra danio's, two head-taillight tetras, 1 neon tetra and two glo-light tetra's in a "5 gallon tank" They have been doing great. Not sure why everyone is against it, they are all healthy and swimming contently.

Thanks for everyone's advice. (Yes, dwarf frogs are banned. EVERYTHING except fish is banned.)

I think I'll probably end up getting a betta, or possibly two bettas and a divider. I was hoping for something that I hadn't kept before, but bettas are neat.
