I have noticed different breeds of fancies have different sizes. Any suggestions for fancy breeds that I can keep in a 29 gallon for their lifetime? I'd rather not get Ryukins because they are prone to swim bladder problems.

The full background: I have a 75 gallon planted tank at home with 5 fancies. My first tank was a 29 gallon, and it's now empty. I'd like to set it up in my office at work and get 2 fancies. I wouldn't want to go much bigger than 29 gallons because 1. I'd have to buy a new tank, 2. I'm not sure my office furniture could support a bigger tank, and 3. I don't have easy access to a faucet where I can attach a hose, so it's back to bucket changes. Planning to get a 300 GPH AquaClear 70 and keep the swimming area clear except for maybe a plant or two.

At home I currently have 1 fantail, 1 black moor, 1 ryukin, 1 oranda, and 1 telescope. The fantail and black moor are biggest because they are oldest. The black moor has gotten very large and long. He has no swim bladder issues. The fantail seems to have slowed his growth, and will occasionally get floaty if I feed too many pellets. My ryukin's tails are deformed since I got him, I just didn't notice at the time because of my inexperience. His tails don't balance him properly and he has swim bladder on top of that. The oranda and telescope are younger, but they are both growing nicely with no swim bladder issues.

I'm leaning towards getting 1 fantail and 1 black moor or telescope for the 29 gallon, but would appreciate any advice or suggestions.

I know ranchu generally stay pretty small by goldfish standards, and I think pearlscales do too (though they tend to grow pretty wide and spherical). Pearlscales are rather prone to bladder issues because they are so round.

The more "fancy" they are, generally the smaller they stay. So fantails can get pretty big, as they don't have as compact of a body as other more "fancy" varieties.

If I had to choose, I'd say go with two ranchus. They're so cute!

Thank you for the reply. I hadn't even thought about ones like Ranchus that don't have a dorsal fin. That's probably what I'll go with.

UPDATE: Went with 40 gallon tank at office, 1 ranchu and 1 oranda. Doing great so far. They don't sell Ranchus at PetSmart so I went to my LFS for the first time in a long time and they actually had Ranchus in stock. Good little fish.

Nice! Why the change of heart from 29 to 40? A 40 will be nice and roomy for those two guys once they grow.

yeah, especially with the burden of bucket water changes.

Yeah. I don't mind the bucket toss for tanks 55g and under. To me, it's *usually* easier than rolling out hoses, etc.. But in an office setting? Ugh...
