What is the smallest corydoras catfish commonly available? The reason i'm asking is because i just got my younger sister her very first aquarium for x-mas and was looking for some neat and cute bottom dwelling fish to scavenge left over bits of food. The size of the aquarium is 6 gallons and i know that cories like to be in groups. I just wasn't sure if this would be a good choice of not. Also, what other fish would you suggest? I was thinking guppies or other small livebearers. I don't have alot of experience in FW thought i have a good deal of experience with SW and was thinking about what would be good hardy fish that look nice and are fun to keep her intrigued in the hobby and hopefully get her more interested in it to get even bigger fish tanks and deal with fish for the more experienced hobbyist:). All of your input is greatly appreciated.

thanks again

C. hastatus stay right around an inch, maybe even a tad below. But, I wouldn't suggest them for a 6g. I'd say 10g minimum, as they like to swim around in a big group and a 6g doesn't provide enough room INO.

I'd go with some male guppies or maybe a trio of Platies......or a few female bettas (if there is alot of cover).....or a dwarf puffer........or a shrimp tank. :)

I personally would not put cories in a tank that small. they are very active at times love to zip around like maniacs. Course sometimes they like to rest at the bottom, but they need swim space too. :)

yes that's what i was thinking about the cories as well. I'm still thinking about a stocking list so if anyone has any ideas lets hear em :)

I agree, especially since pretty much all of the pygmy cory species arent as "bottom bound" as their larger cousins. they tend to school in the middle to upper areas of the tank more than the bottom :)

I have three pygmy cories in my ten-gallon, heavily planted tank, and they've been there since last year... (see to your left) :) The biggest one is ~ 0.5 inch. Their sizes haven't changed much at all.

You could also consider some cherry shrimp for that size tank. My children and I just love them and my shrimp only tank has become a favorite.
