I have several snails... some Canas and some mysterys. They have been laying clutches for about 2 months. I have had about 10-15 cana clutches [got a couple snails from one clutch!!!] the mystery snails are more likely to hatch. i have not got as many of those clutches and baout half have been good. i usually get 50-100 snails from the clutch. is this normal? i have to assume that something is going on with the canas.

on a side note... in a tank where ramshorns and ponds snails are flourishing... why are my trapdoors slowly dying off. they are my favorites.

thanks.

Gaven, do you mix brigs and canas? It's possible your canas are eating the baby brigs. Canas gained notoriety for this habit. I myself observed this unusual behavior with juvenile canas. They ate every baby snail (except themselves). I advise against mixing both (except for adult canas that are more passive as they mature).

As for your trapdoors, it's possible they are starving to death as your other snails outcompete them for food.

Trapdoors are pretty difficult to keep in the home aquaria as they donot always readily accept prepared foods and veggies. I have had difficulty keeping them myself as they are very shy and didn't seem to want to come out to eat except after dark. If you do not have a good established tank with the proper temps for them, its likely they are starving to death.

As for the canas and bridgesii, the canas will cannabalize and also are much faster eaters then the bridgesii. Its likely they are outcompeting for food as well as munching on the young.

My canas and briggs are in different tanks. the canas are in a 55 gal and the briggs are in a 10 gal. there are 5 canas and a few small fish. the 10 gal has about 10-15 grown briggs and some babies. both tanks have ramshorns and 1 the smaller one also has a couple spixis. the canas lay about 2 clutches a week. they all get old and bad.

i will add more algae waffers for the trapdoors. is that their food of choise?

the ones that are alive in my tank are out all the time. these are the bigger ones. i keep trying to get them to survive. i really like these little dudes.

Spixis will eat other snail eggs as well. Lovely trapdoors!

i have heard that about the spixis. i figured i would take the mystery snail clutches out cause they are out of water. the others are not going to bother me to much if they get ate.

i was thinking about the apple clutch duds. i have taken some out and put them in plastic cups and i have left some in the tank. they stay pretty humid. should they be kept in a dryer place?

It may be that the baby snails are still too small to be seen, especially if you have gravel in your tank. I had some trapdoor snails and they died and I think they may have died because the temp in my tank was warmer than what they like.
